Prior to working with Path Wellbeing, this 38-year-old client was experiencing hypothyroidism, worry, anxiety, overwhelm, constipation (less than 1 BM per day), malabsorption, irritability, melancholy/depression, otosclerosis (abnormal bone growth in the middle ear), light sleeping and fatigue. 

The client was taking L-Thyroxine to manage their thyroid levels and accompanying symptoms. They were curious to learn more about holistic health in order to continue to feel better.  

This client was consuming caffeine throughout the day had an erratic work schedule, and many commitments. Their relaxation time consisted of crossing things off their to-do list. 

The client’s primary symptoms were tridoshic. Meaning all three doshas (vata/air, pitta/fire and kapha/earth) were playing significant roles in symptom manifestation. This includes hypothyroidism, otosclerosis and low energy. 

The Plan We Created

After doing a full intake and assessment, and understanding their unique needs, one of our practitioners offered this client nutrition and lifestyle support designed for their specific constitution and imbalances. 

Hypothyroidism often presents as a kapha or kapha/earth imbalance with symptoms of fatigue, weight gain that is difficult to lose and dull facial expression. However, more often than not, the root cause is more directly related to excess vata/air and pitta/fire burn out that results in low ojas, or compromised immunity and vitality. 

Still, it was crucial for this treatment plan to manage both vata/air and kapha/earth while protecting Ojas/vitality. 

nutrition & Herbal Plan

The client introduced a cleansing hydrating drink before coffee, a high protein, easily digestible breakfast and herbs to rebalance digestive fire. 

The goal was to create consistent meal times where intentional pauses could be taken throughout the day. We focused on cooked leafy green vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes. For spicing, we used coriander, ginger, turmeric, cumin and ajwain to help balance digestion and improve nutrient absorption.

We reduced caffeine and increased hydration throughout the day through pleasant herbal teas and bone broths. 

We also used herbal remedies such as a mind nasya oil and a traditional guggul-based herbal remedy indicated for some cases of hypothyroidism. 

Dietary Lifestyle Practices

Morning and evening routines were slowly and appropriately established for sustainable changes. We incorporated strength training in the morning and restorative yoga in the evenings. Abhyanga/self-oil body massage became something they enjoyed on a regular basis. Practices for slowing down and fostering self connection were established that include breathing practices, specifically alternate nostril breathing which helps balance hormones, and guided meditations. 

Results & Timeline

Within 2 Months…

Energy levels improved with proper hydration, a constitutionally-appropriate high-protein breakfast and taking time to pause throughout the day. 

Within 6 Months…

The client experienced normal daily bowel movements, better sleep and a more stable emotional state. Because the client is showing signs of improved endocrine function, they are working toward a plan to reduce or eliminate L-Thyroxine in conjunction with their doctor and Ayurvedic clinician. Most importantly, the client looks forward to routines that enable them to be more engaged throughout their days. The client has expressed immense gratitude for the process of self discovery and the changes she has made working with Path Wellbeing.
