Case Study #19

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Case Study

Before Working With Us

Before Working With Us

Prior to working with Path Wellbeing this 35 year old female was experiencing constipation alternating with diarrhea, anxiety, leg aches, sluggishness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, hypoglycemia, poor circulation, irregular menses, ovarian cysts and ovarian pain. This client was 1.5 years postpartum and struggling to meet the daily demands of parenting, home and work-life due to their symptoms.

She had little routine, no time for restoration and put a lot of pressure on herself to reach high levels of productivity. She had a challenging relationship with food, did not enjoy eating and only ate only to prevent nausea, which did not work most of the time.

The client sought Ayurvedic care to foster fertility for a second child, restore a positive relationship with food, and improve energy levels.

The Plan We Created

full intake & assessment

After completing a full intake and assessment one of our practitioners was able to determine the client’s constitution and current state of imbalances. This client came to us with a strong understanding of her goals, which formed the foundation for her treatment plan.

Building a healthy relationship with food was a top priority. In Ayurveda, we understand that balancing digestion is essential to balancing the dosha.

nutrition & Lifestyle Practices

The client began with eating a high protein breakfast while seated in a calm environment. Hydration was immediately addressed through the intake of warm water with ghee and lime before morning coffee. Warm cinnamon water was sipped throughout the day to provide cellular hydration and stabilize blood sugar levels.

A healthy relationship with food was fostered over time by implementing general healthy eating guidelines such as a few deep breaths before eating, eating without distractions, practicing visualization meditations, chewing food to an even consistency and more.

Herbs

Triphala, a traditional tridoshic polyherbal formula, promotes cleansing and helps to restore functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. She also began a nourishing reproductive tonic drink and a nasya (nasal oil) mind formula, which helped to soothe and cleanse the nasal passages and release stress and tension in the mind.

Lifestyle Practices

Morning movement was a priority and sun salutations became a regular part of her routine to help support circulation, decongest the lymph, improve her lipid profile and foster regular menstrual cycles. Gentle walks in nature on a weekly basis helped to support her subtle body imbalances and alternate nostril breath in the evening enhanced hormonal harmony and reduced stress. She also learned abhyanga, self-oil massage, and enjoyed evening baths with aromatherapy.

Ayurvedic Approach to Fertility

In traditional Ayurvedic practice, deep tissue cleansing is an important step to take for fertility, even in healthy individuals. This enhances fertilization by healing and nurturing the reproductive system. This client’s cleansing practices included: heat therapy, castor oil packs, abhyanga or self-oil massage, nasya oil, a kitchadi monodiet, breathing practices and rest.

After any cleansing a period of rejuvenation is necessary. This includes rejuvenation to food and digestion, lifestyle, behavior and herbs. Daily routines, nourishing foods, nourishing eating practices and self massage are all implemented to restore proper physiological function to body, mind and Self.
