Prior to working with Path Wellbeing, this client was navigating multiple long-term symptoms. Her digestive symptoms included gas, bloating, alternating constipation and diarrhea, as well as discomfort after eating. She frequently experienced high levels of anxiety and overwhelm that were married with anger and frustration. She also had symptoms of lymph congestion including fatigue, headaches and swollen glands and Tempromandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD) that caused pain in her chewing muscles, face and neck and resulted in limited movement of the jaw.
This 50 year-old perimenopausal female was starting to wonder if there was a better way to navigate her health. For the first time in her life, she felt she was ‘slowing down’ after prioritizing her schooling and career for as long as she could remember. Fearing additional symptoms of unbalanced menopause, she was ready to begin her Ayurvedic journey.
Ensuring the most accurate treatment plan that addresses the root causes of disease involves an in-depth initial intake and assessment. During this client’s initial intake, her relationship to food revealed itself as a root cause of her imbalances.
The client’s relationship with food and eating had been associated with shame since childhood. Her mother had been on strict dieting regimes while carrying her in pregnancy and held the belief that “food is what makes you sick.” As a result, the client’s entire life evolved into cycles of food restriction followed by overeating and she was left disconnected from her self-worth and her sense of self.
Long-term imbalances take time to heal. The client’s relationship to food dated back to womb development. Her symptoms were also tridoshic (all three elemental energies were imbalanced), which meant her healing plan would be more complex. Treatment required a delicate dance of healing the interconnected energies that all need care, attention and, ultimately, love.
Addressing lifestyle was important for setting the foundation for sustainable changes. The client also needed to work with their relationship to food through multiple approaches. She began the very challenging task of dedicating to an evening gratitude journal, exploring what she was thankful for in her life and with herself.
She built on this evening routine with self-love practices that included abhyanga/self-oil massage, garshana/dry brushing, baths with aromatherapy, yoga nidra and guided meditations.
Her morning routine was focused on appropriate physical exercise and breathing practices. She used affirmations to shift perspective and set the tone for the day.
Each of her lifestyle practices incorporated acts of self love that increased her mind-body connection. She built on these practices over time as they deepened and evolved.
Hydration had to be addressed as the client was over-caffeinated and only drinking 2-3 cups of water a day. She began a warm morning hydration drink prior to coffee. We also worked together to redefine food as nourishment. She established new positive experiences in the kitchen by using all of her senses to connect with a variety of spices, new ingredients, and new cooking methods. Her curiosity and exploration were cultivated to repattern her beliefs around food. We made sure her meals were easily digestible, well-cooked and satisfying.
She established mindful eating practices utilizing all five senses.
We formulated an appropriate digestive spice blend to rebalance her digestive fire and we introduced an herbal mind formula to support the processing of emotions and nourish the nervous system.
The client had successfully tried many different foods and was having a seated breakfast every morning (she had previously been skipping breakfast). She experienced less gas, bloating and discomfort after meals. Anxiety and stress levels also noticeably reduced, along with head and neck pain.
She was not experiencing irritability-things that used to bother her no longer did. She had consistent bowel movements daily and her energy levels improved significantly. She enjoyed cooking and connecting with her food. Pain and symptoms related to TMJD subsided.
She began to experience self-confidence as never before. This enabled her to make distinct changes in her schedule based on her own needs. She was able to listen to her appetite; eat when hungry and stopped when satiated. Her weight was consistent and she felt strong in her body. She looked forward to her morning exercise and breathing practices and she dedicated to continue listening to her body’s innate wisdom.
