Prior to working with us at Path Wellbeing this 26-year-old female was experiencing persistent acne. Her oily skin was covered with a mix painful red inflamed lesions, pus-filled lesions and white heads. In high school these skin issues negatively affected her confidence and self esteem. She always thought that once she reached her 20’s, her skin issues would simply dissipate, relating her skin issues to hormonal changes in puberty. However as years passed and she found herself in her mid-twenties, her skin issues remained. She noticed significant increases in acne around the time of menses and in the summer months.
She had tried countless treatments, products, methods, protocols and diet changes. Some were more successful than others, but none brought the results that were promised. When this client came to us they had been following a vegan diet, was a non-smoker and socially/occasionally drank alcohol.
After a full intake and assessment, with one of our practitioners, a treatment plan was created to address the root cause of her persistent adult acne.
Based on how the acne was presenting itself, it was clear both pitta (fire and water) and kapha (earth and water) were vitiated.
The intake revealed pitta and kapha doshas were dominant in their constitution and were exasperated by vata dosha. There was constant worry about doing everything right, an extension of self to do all the things: study, work, volunteer, exercise, maintain an active social life…
The treatment plan addressed not just cleansing and cooling the blood to support liver health and skin health but also addressing the root causes of toxic buildup, including overwork, overwhelm, perfectionism and criticism.
One of the biggest challenges to overcome was changing the client’s mindset around rest. To allow for restoration, to feel worthy of rest. Yoga Nidra became an integral part of their nighttime routine and eventual became an afternoon practice as well.
We worked with cooling breathing practices such as lunar pranayama and sheetali pranayama to reset the nervous system and shift perspectives. We also worked with priorities, focusing on their most important tasks and letting go of others. This included a lot of journaling and reflection time.
It was extremely important to balance digestive fire because the liver plays such an important role in the breakdown of nutrients and chemicals carried by the blood and distributed to the skin.
The client adopted general healthy eating guidelines including taking deep breaths before eating and eating in a calm environment, all of which allowed the client to shift their relationship with food and to experience food as a source of nourishment. The client also avoiding sour, spicy and very cold substances, and alcohol and adopted a pitta-pacifying and anti-inflammatory food plan. She also underwent an Ayurvedic cleanse to remove deep-seated toxins.
The client received a host of herbal formulas to treat the liver, nourish the skin, improve antioxidant activity and boost overall health. These included amalaki as a source of Vitamin C, Vitamin E and antioxidants; licorice root tea as a nutritive tonic, anti-inflammatory, anti bacterial and hepatoprotective agent; and a digestive spice mix with herbs such as cumin, coriander and fennel. Finally, the client began regular use of a herbal face mask that included licorice, honey, rosewater and lavender.
