Prior to working with us at Path Wellbeing, this 18-year-old female nursing student was also working late nights as a waitress. It was Summer in between her first and second year of school, and she had been working full-time for the Spring and Summer months.
She was experiencing symptoms of mixed irritable bowel syndrome; alternating constipation and diarrhea, abdominal cramping, bloating and excessive gas. Nausea was experienced daily. Menses were painful and irregular. She experienced worry, anxiety, and overwhelm accompanied by anger and criticism. She was diagnosed with asthma as a young child and suffered from seasonal allergies for as long as she remembered.
Upon completion of a full intake and assessment with one of our practitioners, a treatment plan was created. It was determined that her constitution was primary pitta/fire and secondary vata/air with long term pitta/fire and vata/air imbalances.
The asthma and seasonal allergies that she experienced from a young age indicated low Ojas or immunity and both contributed to localized inflammation.
Her relationship to food changed after starting oral birth control when she was fifteen years old. This was also when she started experiencing nausea more regularly. Food often made her nauseous and she rarely had an appetite. She was on oral contraceptives for two years.
Outside of work and school, she experienced a more sedentary lifestyle. In her last two years of high school, she was completely exhausted by the end of the day and would nap or read in bed. She would maybe snack on chips or crackers or have some fruit and complete homework in bed.
Doing well in school was important to her and she put a lot of pressure on herself to receive good grades and get into the nursing program she wanted. Her symptoms persisted once she entered post-secondary school.
This client came to us before their second year classes began. This gave us the opportunity to implement nourishing practices and personalized recommendations before adjusting to an entirely new schedule. Going slow was important as we wanted to focus on building Ojas, or the strength, vitality and immunity of her body.
Yoga Nidra – to maximize rest, build immunity and create a scheduled practice.
Abhyanga – with grounding and building herbs for both calming and increasing vitality.
Avoiding studying and reading in bed – to improve quality of sleep.
Rosewater Eye Wash – to mitigate eye strain from screen use and to support burnout recovery.
Intentional Breath Breaks – Short resets to ground and calm the nervous system and support energy levels throughout the day.
Sound therapy – Binural beats for studying/ reading.
Walks in nature – or short walks around the block.
Boundaries around study habits – finishing on the computer by 10pm-writing a manageable to do list of the next day.
Aromatherapy– Pitta/vata-calming aromas such as lavender, cedarwood, and sandalwood.
