Agni-Enhancing Winter Digestive Tea

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Combine all spices in a small saucepan with 1.5 cups water. Bring to a boil, then lower to simmer 10 mins. Strain and enjoy!

Notes

This Agni-enhancing tea is particularly beneficial for low or variable digestive fire, Ama accumulation, post-meal heaviness, and sluggish digestion. It serves as excellent preparation for cleansing protocols, supports healthy metabolism, and effectively reduces gas and bloating through its carminative and warming properties.

For optimal results, consume this tea before meals to kindle Agni and prepare the digestive system, or sip slowly after meals to support digestion and prevent Ama formation. Sipping slowly allows the aromatic spices to stimulate taste receptors, triggering the cephalic phase of digestion that primes enzyme secretion throughout the gastrointestinal tract.

Dosha Type

V-K-P+

  • Balances Vata: The warming, aromatic, grounding qualities calm Vata’s cold, irregular digestion. Fresh ginger is particularly soothing.

Balances Kapha: The pungent, heating, drying properties counter Kapha’s sluggish, heavy digestion. Dry ginger maximizes this effect.

Pitta Aggravating: Cardamom’s cooling quality and licorice (if included) help to buffer the excess heat in this winter tea but it is best used in small amounts or avoided during acute Pitta imbalance.
