This warm cacao with tahini is a grounding and nourishing drink for late winter and early spring. Cacao has a gently stimulating and heart-opening quality, while the tahini and warm milk soften its intensity and add richness, making the drink both comforting and sustaining. As the seasons begin to shift toward spring, you can easily adapt this recipe by adding a little extra ginger to support digestion and bring a slightly lighter, more warming quality.
Tahini (sesame) is naturally warming, oily, and grounding, helping to nourish the body and balance the slightly drying nature of cacao.
Organic whole milk can be deeply nourishing if tolerated, while plant-based options are best when they are simple, seed-oil free nut milks with minimal additives.
When sourcing chocolate powder look for organic cacao rather than cocoa. Cacao is less processed and minimally heated, preserving more of the bean’s natural qualities and offering a deeper, richer flavour.
V-/K-/P+
Vata:
The drink is warm, creamy, and grounding, which helps soothe Vata and support the nervous system during colder months. Tahini and warm milk provide nourishing fats that counter the slightly drying quality of cacao.
Adjustment: Add a little extra tahini or a small spoon of ghee, and keep the spices gentle (cinnamon and cardamom work well).
Kapha:
Cacao offers a mild stimulating quality that can help counter late winter heaviness, while warming spices support digestion and circulation. The drink is nourishing but can become heavy if overly rich.
Adjustment: Use a lighter milk, reduce tahini slightly, and increase warming spices such as ginger or a pinch of black pepper.
Pitta:
Cacao can be mildly heating and stimulating for Pitta. The tahini and milk help soften this effect, but excess cacao or strong spices may increase heat.
Adjustment: Use slightly less cacao, keep ginger minimal, and emphasize cooling spices like cardamom.
