In Ayurveda, the sour taste – amla rasa – helps to stimulate appetite, improve digestion, balance pH and hydrate the cells. Warm fresh lemon water is also wonderful for removing toxins and stimulating the bowel.
This tonic is well-regarded during cold/flu season as ginger acts as an anti-viral and is considered a vishwabhesaj or “universal medicine”. Fresh ginger is also a diaphoretic, helping to relieve fever. It also stimulates appetite, reduces gas and bloating in Vata-types and can help relieve pain, especially abdominal discomfort.
This recipe is ideal for Vata Dosha and in Fall as it is warming, hydrating and balancing to the excesses of air and ether. Kaphas can replace fresh raw honey with thin older honey to help remove excess mucous secretions and to prevent accumulation. Pitta should use in moderation and only during Fall (avoid in Summer) or when Vata imbalances arise.
